Hitting Bombs: Improve mobility to add distance
Jan 08, 2024by Grant Norland
Every golfer wants to hit the ball farther. One of the most important, and often overlooked, aspects of adding distance off the tee is mobility. Most players think about trying to find ways to generate more power by generating more force (getting stronger), or trying to increase speed. Another popular go-to is new equipment, but this can be expensive and prove to be a waste of money if you don’t move well.

For a large percentage of golfers, especially men over the age of 40, improving mobility is one of the most impactful things that a player can do to increase distance. Why is this?
The more range of movement you have available, the more space you have to generate force. Think of throwing a punch from 2” away from your target - that punch won’t be very forceful (except maybe if you’re Bruce Lee). Backing up just another few inches can drastically increase the impact of that punch because you have more distance to generate force. The same applies for the golf swing.
If you have mobility restrictions in your shoulders, upper back, and hips (the 3 most common limitations for golfers), addressing these issues before focusing on strength or equipment can pay big dividends. You may be surprised how much your swing would benefit from incremental improvements to range of movement in these key areas.
Improvement can be accomplished by doing just a few simple things. As with most physical changes, consistency is probably the most important aspect of improving mobility. Doing one prolonged mobility session 1 times per week won’t have near the effect of several shorter sessions 2 times per day.
